Couples and family therapy has several differences from individual therapy. In this type of therapy, instead of one person being the therapist’s client, the relationship itself is the client. Your therapist will take the time to get to know each of you and help you explore the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that contribute to patterns or communication styles that impact your relationship. Your therapist will help you develop strategies for managing conflict, leading to strong relationships built upon trust and open communication.
During couples and family therapy, you will have honest conversations designed to help you break through communication barriers. You may discuss past hurts, but a great deal of CBT for family and couples therapy focuses on creating solutions for the here-and-now, while also better understanding your partner/ family’s fears and hopes for the future. This type of therapy is a collaborative process, and your therapist will be involved in facilitating open discussions and helping you set goals to help you move forward.
We understand that relationships and families come in different forms. At Insights Group, we are passionate about creating an open and safe environment for all. We welcome divorced parents, blended families, LGBTQIA+ families, and all types of relationships.
While many couples and families come in due to conflict and stress, couples and family therapy can also be helpful before significant issues arise, or if you anticipate life stressors such as moving, changing jobs, or starting a family. You and your partner/ family can benefit from better understanding one another’s ways of coping with life stressors and find ways to support each other during challenging times.
